ROOF SIMULATOR PROVIDES VALUABLE TRAINING

9/30/2008- During a house fire, one of the most crucial tasks is ventilation.  Firefighters use ladders to get on the roof, and cut holes. The holes allow smoke & heat to escape making it easier to fight the fire in the house.  It's an important job, but unless there is an opportunity to practice on a soon to be torn down house, it's not that easy to practice.  In the last couple weeks, members of the LHFD Training Committee started constructing a roof simulator off of an old garage on Stuart Place.  This past Tuesday, the first of many drills was held on the new simulator where firefighters could practice cutting vent holes in pitched and flat roofs.  The simulator itself is built right at ground level and utilizes removable plywood panels.  Once a vent hole is made, the panel is removed and replaced with a fresh piece of wood.
